Dave's Personal Ride: The Insane-a-cycle
Real-World Performance:
Top Speed: Faster than I want to go. I have reached 53 MPH.
Climbing: Gains speed quickly and easily on the steepest hills.
0-35 MPH in under 4 seconds*
0-50 MPH in under 6 seconds*
Range: somewhere between 15 and 20 miles
*The current is limited by software Too much, and the bike
feels more dangerous than fun.

Video files: See it in action! Acceleration Velocity
If you like to blow people away with electric power, this bad boy will do the job. I have raced the fastest "de-restricted" gasoline mopeds - including a GPR Replica - and it's no contest. Same for 125cc and 250cc motorcycles. Even all the noise and vibration coming from a Harley didn't help it against this innocent-looking electric bike.
The "ring-ding-ding" sound of the two-stroke gasoline engine is replaced by the high-pitched turbine whirr of the electric motor. The exhaust smoke and fumes are replaced by clean air, though traces of burning rubber from the rear tire may be detected :-)
Don't try building this at home! There was a lot of twisted metal on the road to this success. There are upgraded bike components you must use.

Yes, that's a racing slick. I don't want the rear wheel spinning; I want it to grab the road, hurling me to the speed limit before I get across the intersection from a stop. Why waste time between zero and the speed limit? I always wondered.
Update 4/19/06: I have over 2500 miles on the Insane-a-cycle now. It's still totally awesome to ride, still unbelievable how much torque it has, still gets my adrenalin pumping when I twist the grip. I have added a suspension seat post (yes!!), which has increased my average riding speed. The chain appears to be the weak link in the drive system, requiring a change every 500 miles, and that's fine with me. Five minutes to replace, adjust, and I'm back in the saddle.
Update 5/20/11: These past few years have been busy, but the occasional ride on the insane-a-cycle is always a reminder of how Phoenix was born. It's obvious the insane-a-cycle is not for mass production, and just a little too powerful for most people. The intent was to correct the common misunderstanding that electric power is weak, or sluggish. Electric power is much more instant, there is no "delay" or "ramp" as it picks up speed. Electric motors provide instant torque, so if you apply full throttle on the insane-a-cycle, you'll find yourself laying on your back with the bike 100 yards ahead!
